Vocational training and skill development programs are conceptualized, executed and monitored by various organizations that work closely with the government of India. Dedicated to achieving scalable skilling with quality and higher productivity, there are various plans and schemes particularly in the unorganized or informal sector which accounts for 83% of India’s workforce. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Ministry of Labor and Employment – MoLE

One of the oldest and important Ministries of the Government of India, MoLE’s main responsibility is to protect the interests of workers in general and also the rural and urban poor and that section of people who are deprived sections of the society. There have been various schemes under MoLe like the National Career Services which deals with providing job matching services to youth in an easy manner.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act – NREGA

One of the government’s flagship scheme, NRGEA guarantees right to work in rural areas by providing wage employment to unskilled manual workers. Employment under NREGA has a legal clause, the employment schemes are directly implemented by the gram panchayats, and 100 days of employment is ensured to people in every household where a member is willing to do unskilled work.

Ministry Of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship – MSDE

Coordination of overall skill development efforts across the country, skill up-gradation, building the vocational and technical training framework, building of new skills, and innovative thinking not only for existing jobs but also jobs that are to be created are some of the responsibilities of MSDE. Other missions like National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), National Skill Development Fund (NSDF), National Skill Development Agency (NSDA), and 33 Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) have also been aided and supported by it. These also focus on skill development.
