How AR and VR Impact Personalized Learning

Personalized learning is an instructional approach which focuses on the needs of an individual learner. Keeping in mind the learner’s aspirations, the objectives are set for personalized learning and the instructional content and approaches are crafted in accordance with those objectives.

Blending the real environment with a digital setting, Augmented Reality enables the materials that are part of the real setting, such as textbooks, paper, posters, and different objects to trigger instructions in the digital environment. The students access a new layer of knowledge by simply pointing the device to the object. A computer-generated simulation of a 3D environment, Virtual Reality requires special equipment, which comes in the form of a headset. Despite being an expensive investment for the educational sector, Virtual Reality has immense advantages because it simulates real-world environments.

Personalized Learning is an incredibly challenging goal to achieve in a classroom setting. For e.g., it’s impossible to allow one to make progress in arts while neglecting math as the students’ achievements are still measured against national standards. The educators have to measure and control too many variables and make too many decisions In order to develop a proper teaching approach.

This is where AR and VR get into the picture. With the help of these technologies, we achieve more immediate engagement of the learner. For example, virtual reality can place the students in a realistic setting that would assess their individual skills when they are being trained for safety or during a fire drill. Similarly, the educator can create interactive experiences in augmented reality without the need to write complex code as long as the students have tablets or smartphones. AR makes the personalized learning system more relevant and accurate.

AR and VR technology take learning beyond basic memorization and observation by enabling the students to access authentic instructional practices and interact with the material at their own pace. Though we have a long way to go, we have to keep exploring as these technologies have a lot of potential.
